‘I Don’t See Myself Ever Doing Gospel Again’- Simi Opens Up on Her Music, Boyfriend and More
X3M music star,
Simisola Ogunleye popularly known as Simi is gradually becoming one of the
big names in the Nigerian music industry. The Afro-pop singer, who started
her music career singing gospel, is opening up on why she stopped chasing a
career in gospel music and decided to go mainstream.
Speaking to PUNCH in a recent
interview, the 28-year-old JAMB question crooner stated
that most people believed she stopped singing christian songs because she
wanted to make money but she clarified that this wasn’t the case.
“(For me) Music became about ‘more’, I wanted to have a broader purview. It was a tough decision for me to make at first. However, my faith in God hasn’t waivered because I went mainstream, I prayed to God to bless my career if it was his plan for me. I also don’t see myself doing gospel music again” she stated.
Simi, who
recorded a few successful gospel hits like Ara Ile in her
early music years, started singing in her early teens with her church choir and
she wrote her very first song at the young age of 10.
The Tiff singer
also revealed how being raised by a single mum has shaped her as a person.
“My parents’ separation left an impression on me that life isn’t always a bed of roses. It also made me realise the need to work harder to achieve my dreams. As a result, nothing fazes me.”
The singer also
used the opportunity to once again address the dating rumours between herself
and Falz.
“Falz and I are just friends, my man is mature and understands the fact that I may be erroneously romantically linked with an artiste simply because we work on music projects together.”
She also added
that she may be subconsciously picky when it comes down to dating.
