Gunman Kills 3 Police Officers in Baton Rouge, Louisiana
A gunman on
Sunday opened fire on seven police officers in Baton Rouge, Louisiana,
killing three of them, the CNN
is reporting.
According to
officials, the police received a call of “suspicious person walking down
Airline Highway with an assault rifle.” When police arrived, the man opened
fire.
The remaining
officers are hospitalized in critical condition, the source said.
Baton Rouge is
the town where Alton Sterling was shot and killed by policemen earlier this
month. It is not clear if the shooting of the cops is connected to that earlier
shooting that caused outrage and widespread protest across America. But
a sniper had used the opportunity of the protests to ambush and kill five
policemen in Dallas with a rifle.
“We can’t take
anything for granted anymore,” East Baton Rouge Sheriff Sid Gautreaux said last
week.
Kip Holden, the
mayor-president of East Baton Rouge Parish, said authorities were still trying
to get a handle on the situation.
“The count is
three officers dead possibly. There is still an active scene. They are
investigating,” he said.
“Right now we
are trying to get our arms around everything.”
“Everything is
moving fast and I have not been able to verify everything,” Holden said.
