The cause of the
market fire outbreak is yet to be ascertained as traders grapple with estimating
their losses.
This fire
incident adds to a growing list of fire disasters in large markets in various
states, predominantly in Nigeria’s north.
Last year,
a fire outbreak at the Sokoto central market affected many shop and led to
the loss of goods and property worth millions of naira.
Eye witnesses
said it took the combined efforts of Firemen from the state Fire Service,
personnel of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, the Police, traders
and some good Samaritans to put out the fire.
Two days ago, a
fire outbreak at the popular Sabon-Gari market in Kano state
similarly resulted in heavy losses for the traders.

The Sabon-Gari
market fire had started from France road’s section of the market where
furniture and other household items are sold. The fire ravaged the stalls
all through the night and could not be brought under control till daybreak.
Fire service
officials and traders battled with the fire while security personnel comprising
police, Army, civil defence and vigilante were deployed to the Sabon-Gari
market.
There have also
been other fire incidents at market places in Kano state. In March, a number of
shops were destroyed at the Abubakar Rimi market in Kano after a fire
outbreak razed down the area.
There are
however indications that the Sokoto old central market fire may not have
been fully put out.
Over time, many
have attributed the incessant market fire outbreaks to alleged careless
handling of electric appliances and power surge, while some others have
insinuated that it might be a new form of economic terrorism.
