Portugal are Champions of Europe
Portugal have
been crowned champions of Europe after substitute Eder scored in extra-time to
seal a 1-0 win over hosts France in the final of Euro
2016 final on Sunday.
It is the first
major international title for the Portuguese who were forced to play over 90
minutes of the grueling tie after losing their captain and talisman Cristiano
Ronaldo to injury.
Ronaldo, looking
to become the all-time leading scorer at the European Championships, went down
after a heavy tackle from Dimitri Payet in opening stages but played on before
being replaced by Ricardo Quaresma in the 25th minute.
Eder wrote his
name in Portuguese folklore with a wonder strike at the Stade de France
Eder, who plays
his club football for Lille LOSC in the French Ligue 1, collected the ball in
midfield, cut inside past two French defenders before unleashing a powerful
drive past France goalkeeper Hugo Lloris with 11 minutes of extra time left to
stun the vocal home crowd and sending the Portugal bench into raptures.
Didier Deschamps
men came agonizingly close to snatching at the end of 90 minutes when
substitute Andre-Pierre Gignac’s shot rebounded off the post with Antoine
Griezmann inches away, while Raphael Guerreiro hit the crossbar with a free
kick in extra-tie as Portugal grew into the game and eventually prevailed
against the odds.
