RMD is Suing JUMIA Over Unauthorised use of His Photo, Fans React

Nollywood star Richard-Mofe Damijo is ready to drag popular online shopping mall Jumia to court over the unauthorized use of his photo on the brand’s Fashion Instagram page.

The 55-year-old actor called out Jumia for the consistent use of his image to promote their products without his permission after they posted his photo on their Jumia Fashion Instagram page yesterday.

According to RMD’s publicist, the unauthorized use of RMD’s image by the online fashion and beauty retailer has been ongoing for a while and has had the effect of portraying to unsuspecting customers that Jumia enjoys the patronage /endorsement of RMD.

RMD believes that the unauthorized use of his image to promote Jumia products and website has enhanced brand awareness about Jumia’s fashion line at his expense. The Diamond Ringactor is said to have asked his lawyer, Mena Ajakpovi of Messrs. Abraham & Co. to engage Jumia on the matter but they have been defiant and unapologetic.

Even though they admitted to taking the images from the actor’s Instagram page, they claim there is no copyright infringement case since the image was on a public platform. Jumia has since taken down the photo but RMD’s lawyer stated that they have shown no remorse nor offered any conciliatory compensation.

Jumia’s behaviour has caused the actor to pursue a lawsuit against them for punitive and exemplary damages for the infringement of his image rights. Jumia is yet to release a statement on this.
