According to
the Guardian, a
police source said the priest’s throat had been slit, while a French interior
ministry spokesman added that a second hostage was in a life-threatening
condition.
Local newspapers
said the murdered priest, 92, was from the church
in Saint-Etienne-du-Rouvray, near Rouen.
A total of five
people, including two nuns and two worshipers – were taken hostage by the
assailants. French media reports that the police got wind of the situation when
one of the hostages managed to escape to raise the alarm.
A security
official told the media that the identities of the attackers and motive for the
attack were unclear.
France’s
national police force issued a tweet urging people not to cross the cordoned
off area or take photos or videos of the scene.
The French
president, François Hollande, and the interior minister, Bernard Cazeneuve,
were en route to Saint-Étienne-du-Rouvray in Normandy.
This latest
attack is coming at a time when the European country is on high alert following
a gruesome Bastille Day attack in Nice that killed 84 people and left
hundreds with various degrees of injuries.
