Uefa Dismisses Doping Case Against Mamadou Sakho
Europe’s football governing body, Uefa, has dropped all doping charges against Liverpool and France defender Mamadou Sakho.
Sakho, 26,
served a provisional 30-day suspension after the announcement of positive test
for a ‘fat burner’ in the wake of Liverpool’s dramatic Europa League triumph
over Borussia Dortmund in March.
The
tough-tackling centre-back admitted taking the substance, but Uefa had to
investigate whether it was actually on the list of banned substances, BBC writes.
However, Uefa’s
control, ethics and disciplinary body dismissed the case after a hearing
including experts from World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA)-accredited laboratories.
“I am happy that this is finally over,” a relieved Sakho said. “It’s been a difficult time for me but I knew I had done nothing wrong.
“I am looking forward to getting back in the team and playing again.”
Liverpool said
in a statement: “We are pleased for Mamadou that he can now resume his
playing career.”
The former Paris
Saint Germain defender was eligible for selection for his country for Euro
2016, but coach Didier Deschamps opted to leave him out of the squad.
