Benue Killings: Nigerians Call Out the Presidency’s Silence over the Murder of 81 People by Fulani Herdsmen
Yesterday,
Nigeria was thrown into mourning after new reports confirmed the killing of at
least 81 people in Benue State.
In an interview
with Channels TV, traditional ruler of Logo, Chief Jimmy Meeme, revealed that
70 persons were killed in six out of the 10 council wards under his watch, a
massacre he blamed on the herdsmen whose territorial occupation in the state
has led to spates of violence.
An eyewitness
added that the communities in Logo – Turan, Mbagber, Yonov and Tombo –
were attacked on the same day, while Varser in Ukum Local Government bowed
next, leaving another 53 people dead.
And this has led
to the rise of internally displaced persons in the state.
Kpadoo Asema, a
matron, and John Imenger, an IDP camp manager, spoke to the press about
the despair in the state. Sahara Reporters added that the state
governor, Samuel Ortom, revealed that the security operatives in the state
are unable to apprehend the killers.
However, the
spokesman of the Benue State Police Command, ASP Moses Yamu, dismissed the
claims of poor security in the state and added that only 22 people were killed
in Logo and Ukum LGAs.
This has led to
an outrage on Twitter.
Presently,
Nigerians are calling out the Federal Government’s silence on the violence that
has so far taken hundreds of lives this year.
“I will patiently wait to see the President’s response to this latest killing of people in Benue,” a Twitter user Nedu Naija said, and another, @Afrovii added, “Maybe they’ve started to tell Buhari that Benue people are killing each other to make him look bad. Because I don’t get this inaction.”
