Cultists Kill 2 Policemen and 5 Others in Rivers State, Set Houses Ablaze
PUNCH confirms that two policemen and five
other persons have been killed in a fresh cult clash that erupted on Sunday in
Rumuji and Ovogo communities in the Emohua Local Government Area of Rivers
State.
A battle for
supremacy which has been ongoing between the Icelanders and the Greenlanders
cult groups in Rumuji and Ovogo communities was said to have erupted again.
According to
reports, one of the cult groups invaded the Rumuji Police Station and shot
dead the two officers that were on duty before breaking into some
houses in Rumuji and Ovogo communities, shooting and killing their victims.
The cultists
also reportedly set ablaze several buildings suspected to be owned by members
of a rival cult group or their families. Thankfully, security
operatives later arrived in the community and were able to bring the
situation under control.
In February, the
Icelanders claimed responsibility for the bombing of an Agip Oil gas
facility in Akala Olu village in Rivers state. You can read about it here.
The new Public
Relations Officer of the Rivers State Police Command, Mr Omoni Nnamdi revealed
yesterday that he is yet to be briefed on the incident because he
just resumed duty in the command.
“I just resumed
duty today and I have not been briefed on anything because I just resumed
today. I just entered office and no official handover has been done. If I am
briefed, I will communicate to you,” he said.
