Breaking: Man Wearing Explosive Belt Arrested in Brussels Mall
A suspect
wearing an explosive belt has been arrested in a shopping mall in Brussels, the
Belgian capital, RT is
reporting.
The arrest
followed a bomb alert in a shopping mall. Prime Minister Charles Michel
said the situation is “very suspicious” and called for a meeting of the
National Security Council.
The incident
took place in the City2 Shopping Mall in the heart of the city. The area was
immediately cordoned off and emergency services arrived at the scene.
The police were
notified at 5.30am “of a suspicious situation,” said Ilse Van
de Keere, spokeswoman for the Brussels-Ixelles police.
“A security perimeter was established and the SEDEE unit [Belgian armed forces] is at the site. The operations are still ongoing.”
This suspected
attack is coming almost three months after three co-ordinated bomb attacks on
an airport and metro station in the country, where 32 people were killed and
more than 300 injured. ISIS claimed responsibility for that attack.
ISIS has carried
a series of attacks in Europe, one of the worst being the Paris attack of
November 2015 where over 130 people were killed.
