3 People Confirmed Dead as Floods Submerge Over 150 Houses in Nasarawa
At least 3
people have been killed by floods in Lafia Local Government Area of Nasarawa
State, and at least one person declared missing, Daily Post reports.
Also, about 150
houses were buried in the devastation as many homes were inundated by
floods on Monday.
According to the
report, the affected communities include Adage, Yalwata, Akura, Uga and Gidan
Buba. The flood completely wiped out Gidan Buba Uga, the major bridge in the
area.
Speaking with
the press, the Sole Administrator of Lafia LG, Suleiman Wambai, said that
the disaster was caused by blocked waterways; mostly caused by the dumping of
refuse in drainages. But the community leader of Gidan Buba, Abdulhamid
Usman blamed the floods on the heavy downpour which reportedly lasted for
hours.
Buba confirmed
the deaths, the destruction of properties worth millions, and added that the
missing person is from Dakaci village.
It is unclear if
the State Government had sent relief to the areas as at press time.
