Copa America: Chile Sink Colombia to Set up Argentina Final
Defending
champions Chile have the chance to claim back-to-back Copa America
titles after gliding past 10-man Colombia 2-0 in the other semifinal on
Thursday morning.
Early goals from
Charles Aranguiz and Jose Fuenzalida in Chicago’s Soldier Field helped La
Roja set up a repeat of last year’s final on home soil when they take on
14-time champions Argentina.
Colombia winger
Juan Cuadrado misdirected a defensive header down the path of Aranguiz, who had
the simple task of slotting it past David Ospina, before Fuenzalida tapped
it home from close range after an Alexis Sanchez strike came off the post.
The second half
was delayed for over two hours following severe storms and the threat of
lightning, but the skies finally cleared and action resumed, although the very
wet pitch made conditions difficult for the players.
Colombia’s
efforts at a fight back were scuppered when defensive midfielder Carlos Sanchez
was given his marching orders after receiving a second yellow card in the 57th
minute.
Chile, who
hammered Mexico 7-0 in the quarterfinals, held on to the win to seal
a spot in the final of the centenary tournament where they take on the
imperious Argentina.
