Lupita
Nyong’o, 32, is one of the very few black women who has had the privilege of
taking home an Academy Award on Oscar night. Now, she has taken to social media
to share her thoughts and utter disappointment in the serious “lack of
inclusion” the Academy and hoping the call for change is heard loud and clear.
“Not everything that is faced can be changed.
But nothing can be changed until it is faced,” reads the caption to Lupita’s
latest Instagram post
about thelack of different races included in the 2016 Oscar nominees. The
quote, once said by novelist James
Baldwin, is just the beginning of how Lupita truly feels about
the controversy.
“I
am disappointed by the lack of inclusion in this year’s Academy Awards
nominations,” Lupita, a 2014 Academy Award winner for her role in 12 Years A Slave, wrote in a full
statement released on her Instagram. “The awards should not
dictate the terms of art in our modern society, but rather be a
diverse reflection of the best of what our art has
to offer today.”
Lupita
also pointed out that the conversation about the Oscars and
it’s lack of diversity really made her think about “unconscious prejudice.”
“I stand with my
peers who are calling for change in expanding the stories that are told and
recognition of the people who tell them,” Lupita included, although she has not
confirmed whether or not she will be boycotting the Academy Awards on Sunday,
Feb. 28. However, her statement reveals that she supports previous statements
made by Jada Pinkett Smith, Spike Lee, Tyrese Gibson, and others about how the
Oscars definitely need to change.
