Ondo Court Sentences 4 to Die by Firing Squad
A High Court in
Akure, the Ondo State capital, on Tuesday, sentenced four members of an armed
robbery gang to death by firing squad.
They were
convicted on a four-count charge of conspiracy to commit armed robbery, armed
robbery, murder and illegal possession of fire arms contrary to section 6(b) of
the Robbery and Firearms (Special Provisions) Act R11, Laws of Federation 2004.
According to Punch, the
four convicts – Abdurahman Yinusa, Maliki Sanni, Ajayi Saliu and Mohammed Jimoh
– are said to be repeat offenders whose specialty is hijacking petroleum
tankers at gun point.
Originally a
five-man gang, with one member at large at the moment after their arrest in
December, they had unleashed mayhem along the Isua/Idoani expressway in Ose
Local Government Area of Ondo State.
Three of the
convicts allegedly drove the truck away to dispense the content while the other
two led the driver and the conductor into the bush where they were tied until
the following day.
While delivering
his ruling, the presiding judge Justice D.I. Kolawole of the Special Criminal
High Court within Olokuta Medium Security Prison, said the prosecution counsel
had proven the case against the accused beyond reasonable doubt.
He pronounced
them guilty of the charges before ordering that they should die by firing
squad.
