Eko Disco Says it Cut off Power Supply to National Theatre Over N9m Unpaid Bills
In response to
complaints about the perennial darkness at the National Arts Theatre, the Eko
Electricity Distribution Company Plc (EKEDC) on Sunday gave reasons for its
decision to cut electricity supply to the national theatre.
The EKEDC said
the national theatre was disconnected because the management of the foremost
national landmark was owing the electricity company over N9 million in debt.
The Nation reports that general manager for media
communications at the EKEDC, Mr Idemudia Godwin, told newsmen in Lagos that the
electricity company was left with no choice other than to disconnect the
national theatre after its appeals and demand notices went unheeded.
“We don’t disconnect without serving notice.
“Besides, we recently ran a newspaper advertisement informing ministries, departments and parastatal agencies (MDAs) of government that were indebted to EKEDC of our intention to disconnect them.
“We have commenced disconnection of historic debtors, including residential, commercial, industrial and government establishments within our network,’’ Benjamin said.
Asides the
national theatre, a number of ministries, departments and agencies (MDAs) of
the government are indebted to various electricity distribution companies.
It will be
recalled that the electricity companies had in the past written to the national
assembly to lament the situation.
According to the
executive director, Association of Nigerian Electricity Distributors (ANED),
Sunday Oduntan, the outstanding debt owed by the military, ministries and other
agencies of government stood at N45 billion as at the end of 2015.
Members of the
House of Representatives had at the time urged the power distribution companies
to take necessary steps to recover the debts, without fear or favour –
including the option of disconnecting government agencies if necessary.
