Anglican Church Calls on FG to Disarm Fulani Herdsmen
The Church of
Nigeria (Anglican Communion) has called on the federal government to take
urgent actions to disarm Fulani herdsmen who are allegedly “ravaging the
country.”
Punch reports that the Anglican Church premised its
call to disarm Fulani herdsmen on the need to stem the wave of attacks and
killings of harmless farmers in the country.
The Anglican
Church also called on the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) to map out
strategies to curb the killing of Christians in the country.
Bishop Rev Duke
Akamisoko communicated the church’s position in a communique issued on Sunday after
the second session of the third synod held at St Bartholomew’s Cathedral, Kubwa
in Abuja.
The church
described the continued reports of attacks by Fulani herdsmen in various parts
of the country as both disappointing and dangerous to Nigeria’s desire to
promote agriculture.
Akamisoko said:
“The Synod notes with dismay the prevalent attacks on farming communities by Fulani herdsmen in different parts of the country and demand that more decisive actions should be taken by the government to disarm the herdsmen to stem the rising wave of attacks and killings of harmless farmers as this is inimical to its desire to diversify our economy through agriculture.”
Aside its call
on the government to disarm Fulani herdsmen, the Anglican Church equally
expressed worries about the incessant killing of Christians in some parts of
the country.
Akamisoko noted
that while the church was trying to recover from the effect of the massive
destruction of lives and property in the North-East by Boko Haram insurgents,
the recent murder of two Christian women in Kano and Kubwa, was
worrisome.
The Bishop also
called on the three arms of government to guard the constitutional provisions
of freedom of worship and association.
Speaking on the
government’s anti-corruption crusade, the church appreciated the efforts of the
government, advising the anti-graft agencies to adopt a strategy that would cut
across all arms and tiers of government, agencies and departments.
