Professor Akintunde Akinwande of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in the United States may have rejected his nomination as the chairman of the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC).  Akinwande was reportedly not consulted before being named as NERC chairman. The absence of the MIT professor stalled proceedings at the senate session on Tuesday where 7 persons nominated to the board of the NERC were scheduled to be screened, reports The Nation. In a list of nominees circulated by the Senate Committee on Power, Steel Development and Metallurgy, records of date of birth, qualification, specialisation, experience and certificate of National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) were missing in Akinwande’s column. Details have emerged of a request made by President Muhammadu Buhari to transfer unspent funds under the N500 billion Special Intervention Fund to other critical areas starved of funds. In a letter to the National Assembly read on the floor of the senate at its plenary on Tuesday, President Buhari requested approval for the transfer of N180, 839, 254, 430 billion from the Special Intervention Fund. The letter conveying the President’s request, dated October 24, 2016, contained a list of some agencies for which the fund is being sought. The Nation  provides a breakdown of the president’s proposal on how the sum requested under the virement is to be spent.

The Los Angeles Police Department has launched a manhunt for the man who took responsibility for the destruction of Donald Trump’s Walk of Fame Star on the Hollywood Boulevard. According to  Deadline , a man named Jamie Otis dressed up like a construction worker took a sledgehammer and pick axe to the star dedicated to Trump in 2007 in recognition of his NBC series, Apprentice. Speaking with the media house, Otis said he wanted to remove the entire slab, auction it off to raise funds for the 11 women who have accused the Republican candidate of groping them. But this is not the first time Trump’s star has been attacked. Deadline reports that in January a reverse swastika was sprayed on the star. In June, a mute sign was painted on it, but these were easily wiped off. In July, a street artist surrounded the star with a wall of tiny razor wire, but this is the first time it is being destroyed. Built by TCL (no, not TLC), the awfully-named DTEK60 features a 5.5in QHD AMOLED display. An improvement on the 5.2in FHD screen sat on its DTEK50 predecessor. A CLUSTER OF SEVEN CRIMINALS , a sort of dirty half dozen with a plus one, have swaggered into an Apple store, scared some people and stolen enough iPhones for them each to have two and give five away. According to  Fox News , the thieves stormed the store in Natick, Massachusetts, and carried out a well organised but pretty crappy raid. It seems that the group, a mix of lads and lasses, stormed in and swarmed a display. Once in swarm mode, the group produced some sort of cutting equipment, perhaps strong scissors, cut the security cords that bound 19 handsets, then ran out of the store cradling handfuls of iPhones.  Fox says that the whole thing took about two minutes, or about the time it takes Siri in the UK to work out what you are saying. Michael Buble has confirmed he is going to be the new host of the Brit Awards, starting with the 2017 ceremony. "I belong to the UK. They made me," he told BBC News. "So to be honoured by being asked to do something like the Brits, it's a privilege, it really is." Although Buble has been nominated for a Brit three times, he has yet to pick up one of the prizes himself - although he has won numerous Grammy and Juno awards. Craig David has scored his first number one album for 16 years. Craig David held off competition from Bon Iver, The Shires and Van Morrison The singer's sixth studio album, his first since 2010, outsold its nearest rival - Bon Iver's 22, A Million - by 4,500 copies. The UN has warned it could take days for the full impact of Hurricane Matthew in Haiti to emerge, as the death toll soars to more than 800. The death toll has doubled, and may rise, as rescue teams gain access to southern areas cut off by the storm. The World Food Programme's Carlos Veloso says some of the hard-hit towns can only be reached by air or sea. Many of the deaths in Haiti were in the south-western coast, which suffered the full force of the hurricane this week. Hurricane Matthew is currently battering the coastline of the US state of Florida but has been downgraded to a Category Two storm, with sustained wind speed dropping to 110mph (177km/h). Category Five is the strongest on the five-step Saffir-Simpson scale of hurricane intensity. Rescue efforts are under way to assess the destruction left in the wake of the most powerful Caribbean storm in a decade.
