Teacher Bags 4-Year Prison Term in Edo State for Sexual Molestation of 13-Year-Old Pupil
Rotimi Olayemi,
a 47-year-old teacher at the King of Kings College in Benin, Edo state, was on
Wednesday sentenced to 4 years imprisonment by an Egor Magistrates’ Court for
sexually assaulting a 13-year-old pupil.
Olayemi, said to
be an English teacher at the college, had been arraigned on four counts
bothering on sexual assault.
The prosecutor,
Mrs Osasu Ewemade, had told the court that the convict, Olayemi, committed the
crime on May 26, 2014, in his office in the college.
Olayemi was said
to have invited the victim, a 13-year-old pupil of the school, to his office
where he hugged, kissed and fondled her. He also allegedly put his hand in
her private parts.
The prosecutor
stated that the offence contravened Section 360 of the Criminal Code, Cap 48,
Vol II, Law of the defunct Bendel State of Nigeria, 1976, as applicable in Edo.
The convict
pleaded not guilty to the charges but at the conclusion of trial, the presiding
magistrate, Mrs Igho Braimoh, found him guilty on all counts and sentenced him
to one year in prison for each count.
The magistrate
added that the prison terms would run concurrently. She however, gave an
option of fine of N50,000 for each of the counts.
Olayemi’s
conviction and imprisonment for the sexual assault of his pupil comes at a time
the nation is seized by reports of allegations of sexual harassment
against a teacher at Queens College in Lagos.
The school
management had initially exonerated the teacher, Mr Seni Oshifala, forcing a
public outcry that has now attracted the attention of the federal ministry of
education and the police who are now said to be investigating the allegations.
