Wreckage of Nepal passenger plane found; all 23 aboard dead

We reported earlier that a small passenger plane carrying 21 people including two foreigners went missing in the Nepal Mountains; however, reports coming out of the country confirm that rescuers have found the wreckage of the plane with all 23 aboard dead.

The Twin Otter aircraft, operated by Tara Air, was travelling from Pokhara to Jomsom before losing contact with the control tower shortly after taking off.
The plane was carrying three crew members and 20 passengers, one of them Chinese and one Kuwaiti, and aviation officials say two of those on board were children.

According to Sanjiv Gautam, director general of the Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal, the plane’s wreckage was found near the village of Dana in Myagdi district.

Pokhara is a resort town some 200 kilometres (125 miles) west of the capital Kathmandu. Jomsom, a short distance further north, is the starting point for many people trekking in the Himalayas.
Nepal has a poor aviation safety record. Reports have it that more than 700 people have been killed in over 70 different air crashes since 1949, the year the first aircraft landed in the country.
